On Tuesday February 13, 2018, Superintendent P. Erik Gundersen and members of the Pascack Valley Regional Board of Education, along with superintendents and board members from Hillsdale, Montvale, River Vale, and Woodcliff Lake gathered in the Woodcliff Lake Middle School Media Center for their annual mid-year retreat.  This event is held yearly to update Board members on Regional Curriculum and Instruction endeavors and give every district chance to articulate and share ideas.

This year’s topic was titled:  “Math Looks Different” and included information about the new upcoming K-8 Math Curriculum that has been a three-year regional effort.  The evening began with Regional Director of Curriculum Dr. Barry Bachenheimer and Interim Regional Curriculum Coordinator Dr. Robert Price sharing the goals and philosophy of the new program, explaining the work of Stanford Math Professor Jo Boaler, and the philosophy focusing on multiple paths to solving complex problems.

A brief video mashup showing groups of students from the regional working with curriculum pilots and math “Lab Sites” was shared.  Board members and administrators then had the opportunity to hear from curriculum supervisors from each of the region’s districts who have been an integral part of the math changes.

Nicole Hreno, Supervisor of Curriculum from Woodcliff Lake, spoke about “Number Talks.”  Kim Dowling, Supervisor of Curriculum from River Vale, presented examples of “Rich Tasks and Collaboration,” Dominique Paladino, Supervisor of Instruction from Hillsdale, discussed “Feedback and Language with Students,” and Erik Park, Director of Instruction from Montvale, elaborated on “Math Growth Mindsets.”

While not present, two other important contributors to the curriculum design have been Pascack Valley Regional Math Supervisor Dr. Mark Russo and Regional Math Consultant MaryJo Wieland.  The new math curriculum is scheduled to be implemented in September of 2018 in all districts.
