Brianna Wong’s mom, dad, grandma, aunt, and uncle form a loud and proud personal cheering section at each of Pascack Valley’s basketball games. Even her brother Phil, a star on the school’s football team, lends his support. It’s the littlest member, however, who melts her heart.
During pregame introductions, the Pascack Valley junior guard loves to look up to the crowd and see her uncle Jonathan holding her 4-month-old cousin Camryn aloft.
“I just run out smiling,” said Wong, The Record Female Athlete of the Week. “My team calls him our little mascot because he’s at every game. They all love him, too.”
Camryn and the family have been treated to some great basketball this season. On Jan. 15, Wong had 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lift the Indians to a 78-54 win over Wayne Hills. Two days later, she had 23 points, six rebounds and four steals in a 46-24 victory over Ramapo. On Thursday, she had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals in a 55-24 win over Northern Highlands.
Wong says the Indians are often inseparable off the court, bonding and talking strategy over pregame pasta parties. They recently all gathered at Dairy Queen.
In fact, Wong gives credit to one of her teammates for her improved shooting. Brianna Smith has Wong taking various shots from everywhere on the floor, and it has helped make her a more dynamic offensive threat.
“Last year I would just go to the basket, but this year I can either shoot or go to the basket,” said Wong, who hit a total of 11 three-pointers last week. “The defender doesn’t really know what I’m going to do.”
