Medical Emergency – Choking Victim

On Tuesday April 17, 2018 Montvale Police Department Special Law Enforcement Officer III (SLEO III) Roger Caron was patrolling the interior of Pascack Hills High School in Montvale.  Officer Caron came across a 17 year old female who was exhibiting signs of distress due to choking.  Her face was turning blue, unable to speak, and had her hands to her neck displaying the universal choking sign.  SLEO III Caron asked her if she was choking, to which she nodded her head “yes”.

SLEO III Caron took immediate action initiating the “Heimlich maneuver” on the girl.  After several thrusts the food that had been blocking the girls airway became dislodged and expelled, allowing the girl to breath normally again – saving the girls life.  She was then escorted to the nurse’s office for further medical evaluation.

SLEO III’s are retired police officers who have returned to work as school safety and security officers. The have full police powers and are trained specially for schools including receiving first aid, CPR and SRO training.  SLEO III’s have been placed in the Pascack Valley School District since September of 2017, providing security and a police presence in both Pascack Hills HS by Montvale PD and Pascack Valley HS by Hillsdale PD.
