2019 Smoke Signal Awards
2019 Smoke Signal AwardsThe Smoke Signal (pvsmokesignal.com), Pascack Valley's student-run online newspaper, won 45 state awards, including three major publication-level awards, at the Garden State Scholastic Press Association's annual conference Oct. 28 at Rutgers.

Entries were submitted at the end of last school year and judged over the summer. The Smoke Signal won both Overall Excellence for online publications as well as the Distinguished Online Journalism award, which recognizes it as the most awarded online publication in the state this year. There are no size divisions for the online contests, and this marks the third straight year that The Smoke Signal has been the true No. 1 online publication in the entire state of New Jersey. The more traditional print categories have three size divisions, and The Smoke Signal garnered the Distinguished Journalism award as the most awarded publication in Division B (the medium-sized schools in the state).

Individual first-place finishers included Jeremy Lesserson (Breaking Sports, Sports Writing), Jake Topolosky (Podcasting), Madison Gallo and Rachel Cohen (Breaking News), Josh DeLuca (Breaking Sports), Matt Austin and Victoria Donofrio (Photo Gallery), Madison Gallo (News Writing), Kayla Barry (Column Writing), and Evan Mathai (Photography). Smoke Signal journalists swept first, second, and third places in four different categories: Multimedia Package — Sports, Photo Gallery, News Writing, and Photography.
