Graphic: Various hand made Valentine's Day cardsWhile driving to work one morning, Pascack Valley High School’s Interact Club advisor, Ms. Jessica Andersen heard Kelly Ford on New York’s Country Radio 94.7 announce that they had raised the Valentine’s Day Cards for our Troops goal to 50,000 cards from the prior year’s 30,000 card goal. With Andersen’s father having been a National Guardsmen, and her late grandfather and uncle as former active members of the military, this project really hit home with her, and she knew that her Club and student body could help to make a difference. “The Interact Club’s motto is “service above self” and even during this tough time of a pandemic, I knew my students would get the job done,” stated Andersen. A temporary school closure due to covid and two virtual days due to snow didn’t keep these students from showing their support for our troops. Two students volunteered to use their front steps as drop off locations, and other students brought their cards to Andersen’s classroom as soon as school reopened. As soon as she was finished teaching her first class, she headed to the main office where the secretaries assisted with getting the cards mailed out ASAP. Students created hand made cards from construction paper with artistic drawings, decorative calligraphy writing, stickers, typed letters, and positive upbeat Valentine’s Day messages and thank yous to the Troops for their service. “We were able to mail out two large manila envelopes with Valentine’s Day cards for our troops, and I plan on continuing this tradition next year, and the years after,” stated Andersen.
