Pascack Hills senior Andrew Desautels is currently interning at DDS Dental Supplies located in Montvale, NJ. Andrew’s mentors are Co-founder, Dinesh Sakhrani and E-Commerce Analyst, Twinkle Chhabria.  DDS Dental Supplies specializes in providing dental products and consumable products such as gloves, masks, and surface cleaning products to dentists.

Due to the pandemic, Andrew interns remotely on project-based assignments. This is a general business internship that includes, but is not limited to, data entry and competitive analysis. His knowledge of Excel grew exponentially and will be a huge benefit in college.

In speaking with Andrew, he said:

“I compare and see what products are in [DDS Dental Supplies] catalog, [and see] what’s the difference in their prices [compared to competitor prices], and how can [DDS Dental Supplies]  change their prices to overall improve their sales.”

In addition, to competitive analysis, Andrew has also worked on adding items to customers’ wish lists. This entails researching items for that customer and offering bulk pricing.  He also had the opportunity to learn marketing skills by developing promotional emails and social media posts.

“There are different types of things I've been doing [at DDS Dental Supplies]. At one point, I was working more with the marketing supervisor and right now, I'm working with the eCommerce supervisor,” Andrew said. “I have gotten the chance to experience a couple of different fields that they work on.”

Dinesh and Twinkle have been part of the internship program for the past two years. Dinesh took part in an internship program while he was in high school and he was excited to be a mentor for our program because he understands the benefits of exploring a career prior to going to college.

“It's always exciting to work with new individuals,” Dinesh said. “If [an internship] can help [students] in terms of paving the way for what they want to do in life and to get some real-life experience, it’s always a benefit.”

When Andrew first began his internship, Dinesh and Twinkle agreed that Andrew was an efficient worker because he was able to grasp concepts of his internship assignments quickly.

“I think with Twinkle, she’s been able to show [Andrew] very specific procedures that had to be done, and that has been one thing that led him to success because he is very quick to adapt and understand what has to be completed,” Dinesh said.

The pandemic has changed the way we do business and has given him the opportunity to learn how to efficiently communicate with his mentors on a daily basis via Zoom, phone calls, and emails.

“A lot of [my internship] is communication-based like how to properly communicate with my mentors and how or when to update [my mentors] on my progress,” Andrew said. “Just going back and forth [with my mentors] if I have a question, and learning how to properly ask questions are things I really did learn [from my internship].”

After high school, Andrew will be attending Franklin & Marshall College where he plans to major in business with a computer science minor. Andrew said he looks forward to using the communication, marketing, and computer skills that he has developed through his internship and applying them to his future.
