Dr. Aarti Mallya, District Supervisor of Science and Technology Education, was invited to speak at the AASA / NJASA / NJPSA 5th Annual Women's Leadership Conference at the Palace in Somerset, NJ on Friday, October 1. She shared with participants the alarming statistics on the loss of voice and diminished self-esteem in girls as they move through their middle and high school years; more importantly, they explored how we can empower young women to more fully express themselves in the world through building confidence, resilience, and a healthy self-image.

Session Description:

As best-selling author, researcher and educator Rachel Simmons who has been studying young women for two decades points out, “On the surface girls may seem exceptional, but internally they are anxious and overwhelmed, feeling that no matter how hard they try they will never be smart enough, successful enough, pretty enough, thin enough, popular enough, or sexy enough.” High school can be an especially confusing and stressful time, where self-criticism and fear of failure can lead “young women to be so focused on achieving that they avoid healthy risks, overthink setbacks, and suffer from imposter syndrome - believing they are frauds.” Yet it is during this time that young women begin to form their adult identities, shape values and lay the foundation for their futures. In this session, we will explore how we can empower young women to more fully express themselves in the world through building confidence, resilience, and a healthy self-image.

We are proud of Dr. Mallya for sharing her perspectives on this incredibly important topic.
