On Friday, May 12, 2023, the New Jersey Chemistry Olympics (NJCO) took place at NJIT in Newark, NJ.  Pascack Hills had two teams in the competition and Team A won the Platinum Crucible award for the Most Outstanding Team!  Led by juniors, Lysandra Pinto, Navdeep Singh Bhalla, and Hyunjun (Fred) Lim who took a silver medal for their Bacterial Fuel Cell in the Chemistry Engineering event. While they took no other medals, they placed high enough in all of the other events to score the highest overall and win the competition. Besides the engineering event, the team’s events were: Chemical Research in Polymorphism of Chocolate, Website Design on Alternative Energy, Chemical Nomenclature, Analytical lab on the Percent of Copper in Pennies, and Microscale Lab on the Percent of Iron in Vitamin Supplements.


Coached by Leslie Pugliese and Jim Soltmann, Team A consisted of: Dylan Barrett, Navdeep Singh Bhalla, Ashley Chun, Olivia Ge, Fred Lim, Suhani Mahale, Prisha Mehta, Lysandra Pinto, Thomas Rottinger, Gowri Santhosh Kumar Rekha and Victor Urumov.


Recognition should also be given to Team B, led by sophomores Clara Kim, Alexa Ornstein, and Cayla Solomon who earned a bronze medal for their work in the Analytical lab on the Percent of Copper in Pennies. Rounding out Team B were: Diana Bodini, Michael Dugan, Zoe Green, Arleen Hertzberg, Elizabeth Huang, Michael Kroner, Ryan Kroner, Benjamin Miller, Maya Rose, Robyn Song, and Derek Zheng. Also contributing to both teams were Giulia diSalvo and Logan Litt.
